COMMUNITY & EMERGENCY SERVICES
AMERICAN RED CROSS SERVING EASTERN SOUTH DAKOTA
The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. The American Red Cross exists to provide compassionate care to those in need through a network, here, at home and around the world, through five key service areas: Disaster Cycle Services, Service to Armed Forces, Blood Services, Health & Safety Services and International Services.
CORNERSTONES CLC
Cornerstones Career Learning Center provides education and workplace training for Mitchell area employers and job seekers through basic skill classes, GED preparation and testing, National Career Readiness Certificate skill development and testing, computer instruction, and short-term industry training.
CRIME STOPPERS
Sponsors and Anti-Crime program through a Citizens Board of Directors in cooperation with Law Enforcement Officers.
DAKOTA COUNSELING INSTITUTE
Provides high quality mental health and substance abuse services for persons of all ages to Mitchell and area residents. Services include individual and group counseling, psychiatric and psychological evaluations, case management, halfway house and social detoxification, as well as educational and prevention programs in the community and schools.
DAVISON COUNTY VOLUNTEER SEARCH AND RESCUE
The Davison County Volunteer Search and Rescue Unit is an "Organized group of Trained Volunteers". This unit is designed to assist local agencies in emergency and disaster situations.
The Unit consists of 15 to 20 members with an organized style of administration that consists of a Captain, Asst. Captain and three Lieutenants. The Organization is administered by the Davison County Office of Emergency Management .
Mission: "To provide trained and organized response to emergencies and disasters and to provide trained and organized support to various emergency response agencies in and around Davison County."
EmBe (formerly YWCA)
Operates Kids Klub involving enriching academic, social, and physical activities for elementary children after school; Teddy Bear Treasures, rewarding healthy lifestyle choices for low income mothers with child care items; and Girl Power for girls ages 9-13. EmBe supports the mission of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library with the Mitchell United Way. All programming focuses on elimination racism and empowering women through family support activities.
HELPING HAND PANTRY
This agency supports those in need of personal hygiene and cleaning supplies - which are items that food stamps cannot purchase. It is an all-volunteer organization.
JAMES VALLEY DRUG/DUI COURT
The mission of the James Valley Drug/DUI Court Program is to provide community based rehabilitation through the use of intensive treatment and supervision to stop the cycle of repeat offenders and addiction, thereby creating safe communities and reducing the costs of corrections.
LOVE FEAST
This agency is an "all-volunteer" program which serves a nutritious meal two (2) times a month on Thursdays to those in need. This agency also gives out shoe vouchers and backpacks (full of school supplies) just before school starts to those in need of this assistance.
LUTHERAN SOCIAL SERVICES
The LSS Center for Financial Resources helps people achieve financial stability through financial and housing counseling from certified credit and housing counselors.
Safe Place of Eastern South Dakota (safeplace-esd.org)
“Breaking the Silence—Empowering Lives” Safe Place of Eastern South Dakota provides a 24-hour crisis-line, emergency shelter and advocacy for domestic violence and/or sexual assault victims. The Family Visitation Center provides a safe and supportive environment for families needing supervised visitation or exchanges for the non-custodial parent and their children. Parenting education and support groups are available. Our mission is to provide a safe and empowering environment for victims of family violence through advocacy, education, shelter and family support services.
MITCHELL RECREATION PROGRAMS
The Mitchell Parks & Recreation Department: Building community through the development of Parks, Recreation Programs, Facilities and services, which bring meaning, purpose and pleasure to all people’s lives.
MITCHELL REGIONAL HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
Provides simple, decent, affordable housing to qualified families in Davison and Hanson counties. Habitat believes providing shelter results in self-respect and the hope for a better life.
THE SALVATION ARMY
Assists the needy and less fortunate with food, clothing and other essentials. Maintains a year-round Food Pantry. Provides food to the underprivileged and toys for their children during the Holiday Season. Also gives help in times of emergencies and disasters. Provides youth character building through the Wednesday Kid's Club.
ELDERLY AND DISABILITY SERVICES
MEALS ON WHEELS
Volunteers deliver hot nutritious meals to the elderly, homebound, convalescent, and mentally handicapped 5 days a week.
MITCHELL ADVISORY COUNCIL FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
Our mission is to advocate for people with disabilities. Our purpose is to foster acceptance and meaningful integration of people with physical and mental disabilities. We create, develop, and provide education and information regarding disabilities and the people they affect. We work with community leaders, businesses, and others to encourage that buildings, facilities, and programs are accessible to all.
LIFEQUEST
Provides necessary training, services, and supports to enable people with developmental disabilities to progress to their fullest potential and become more independent and involved members of the community.
MITCHELL VOLUNTEER PROGRAM (MVP)
MVP invites individuals age 18 and over to use their life experience and skills to answer the call of their neighbors in need. MVP volunteers help solve serious problems in their communities just by giving their time.
INDEPENDENT LIVING CHOICES
We provide services to people with disabilities who make independence their choice. Services may include personal care, advocacy, information and referral, summer transition, peer support, and independent living skills training. United Way funding is used to provide home modification and adaptive devices.
JAMES VALLEY COMMUNITY CENTER
The James Valley Community Center (JVCC) is a recreational and educational facility designed by and for adults 50 and older in the Mitchell area. Several local groups meet there and activities and programs are held daily. The JVCC is to enrich the lives of older adults throughout the area and is also the home for the Palace Transit, Adult Nutrition and MVP.
ADULT NUTRITION PROGRAM
Good nutrition for healthy living to those of all ages and over every weekday at five (5) congregate sites in Mitchell. Meal sites located in Ethan, Parkston, Spencer and Mt. Vernon. Meals are affordable, a great variety of food and an opportunity to meet new friends. Free transportation to meal sites in Mitchell.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SERVICES
ABBOTT HOUSE
Established in 1939 providing Premier Services to Youth and Families. Offering Residential Treatment, Professional Foster Care, Specialized Schooling and Independent Living Services to girls and boys aged 7 – 23.
BIG FRIEND LITTLE FRIEND
Provides at-risk youth and young moms with an adult mentor, who serves as a friend, role model and support for the child or young mom. Through these one-on-one relationships the Little Friend gains self-confidence, attains better grades in school and has improved relationships with family and friends. Our goal is to inspire hope and change lives.
BOY SCOUTS of Sioux Council
Scouting offers age-tailored, family-based activities for boys ages 7-20 through Cub Scouting and Boy Scouting and young men and women ages 14-20 through its Venturing program.
DAVISON COUNTY CHILD PROTECTION TEAM
A team composed of individuals from a variety of disciplines and agencies who work together toward the common goal of improving the life situation of children who are abused and neglected.
FIRST CIRCUIT CASA PROGRAM
The First Circuit Court Appointed Special Advocate Program (FCCASA) seeks to promote and protect the best interests of abused and neglected children involved in court proceedings through the advocacy efforts of trained volunteers.
EmBe GIRLS ON THE RUN
Girls on the Run is a life-changing, experiential learning program for girls age eight to thirteen years old. The program combines training for a 3.1 mile run/walk event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. The goal of the program is to encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development.

GIRL SCOUTS - DAKOTA HORIZONS COUNCIL
The Girl Scout mission is to build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. From kindergarten through high school, girls learn the value and the fun of sharing experiences in an all-girl environment with adult volunteers serving as mentors and role models. All program activities are designed with girls in mind to spark their interests, address their concerns, build their skills, and explore the world around them.

Assist local dentists in providing free dental care services to needy children in the Mitchell area.
A Registered Dental Hygienist provides oral health education to the public. Good oral health leads to good overall health.
WEEKEND SNACK PACK
We provide the school system weekly with bags of food for children to take home for the weekend. Each bag contains an entree, a grain, a fruit and three other items.
Mission: To put into the hands of children easy to prepare snacks for the weekend when parents are working or there is no food in their homes.
