The mission of the Helpline Center is making lives better by giving support, offering hope and creating connections all day, every day. We fulfill our mission through the following core service areas:
The Helpline Center began serving South Dakota in 1974. Over the years, the agency formalized from roles held by volunteers to hiring staff. We grew to offering support 24 hours a day, and we were the first location west of the Mississippi River to begin 211 service in 2001. The Helpline Center serves thousands of people every year by connecting individuals to resources and support, providing referrals, building community volunteers, offering hope to individuals with thoughts of suicide and supporting families bereaved by suicide loss. We support over 100,000 people each year. The Helpline Center is the only entity in the state accredited by Inform USA and the only organization in the state that provides a certified crisis line through the American Association of Suicidology.
Delcan Hobbs CPR/AED Fund
The Declan Hobbs CPR/AED Training Fund, supported by Mitchell United Way, provides free CPR and AED training for daycare providers and teachers in our community. This initiative ensures that those responsible for the care and safety of children are equipped with life-saving skills, enhancing the overall safety and preparedness of educational and childcare environments. By making this training accessible at no cost, the fund aims to foster a safer community for everyone.

This fund was established by the Hobbs family after Declan was saved by his daycare provider, Rose Menning, thanks to her CPR training. In honor of this life-saving act, the family partnered with Mitchell United Way to create this fund.
Ride United
Ride United leverages the strength of United Ways, the 211 network, and our partners to address the unmet transportation needs of individuals and families across the country. We reduce travel barriers to essential jobs, services, and more. Our partnership with Lyft enables 211 callers to request transportation to an essential location and receive a ride for free or discounted rate, while the driver is still paid at a normal rate.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book gifting program that mails free, high-quality books to children from birth to age five, no matter their family’s income.
After launching in 1995, the program grew quickly. First books were only distributed to children living in Sevier County, Tennessee where Dolly grew up. It became such a success that in 2000 a national replication effort was underway. By 2003, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library had mailed one million books. It would prove to be the first of many millions of books sent to children around the world.

United for Alice
ALICE is an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, and represents the growing number of families who are unable to afford the basics of housing, child care, food, transportation, health care, and technology. These workers often struggle to keep their own households from financial ruin, while
keeping our local communities running.
United Working Families
United Working Families is an independent political organization for the many, not the few.

We recruit, train, run, and win with Black and Latinx candidates who come from the rank and file of our movements for racial, social, and economic justice. We organize year-round to build the mass organization we need to define the sides of the debate and expand the landscape of the possible. We combine the mass base of the labor movement with the innovation of the grassroots. We are funded and governed by our working class, majority Black and Latinx, majority women membership. We are unbought, unbossed, and unafraid.
